The Good News - It Is Well With My Soul

“Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.”   II Kings 4:26

We never know when some calamity will come into our life to test us. Perhaps you have already experienced losses so severe you wondered how you would survive?

The story of Horatio Gates Spafford offers us hope. He was born in North Troy, N. Y. in 1828. He became a lawyer and he and his wife Anna lived in Chicago where they were close associates of D. L. Moody, the great evangelist.

They were grief stricken when their only son died in 1870 at four years of age of scarlet fever and later on October 8, 1871 Horatio lost his real estate holdings in the Great Chicago Fire.

He and his family planned a holiday to Europe to recover from their grief and assist Moody in a great revival.  Due to last minute responsibilities he had to send his wife and four daughters ahead on the Ville du Havre, a French ship, and he planned to catch a later vessel.

Nine days later Spafford, who was 45 years of age, received a telegram from his wife with the message, “saved alone, what shall I do?” All four daughters were among the 226 who drowned when the ship sank twelve minutes after a collision at sea on November 22, 1873.

Immediately Spafford caught another ship and while en route to reach Anna the Captain told him when they were at the site where the ship had sank and the children had drowned. It lay on the bottom three miles below them.

It was at that time he went to his cabin and wrote the lyrics of It is Well With My Soul. He based them on the Shunammite woman who had lost her son to death and was asked if everything was all right and she replied, “It is well.“ Later Phillip Bliss would set the lyrics to music and it has since become one of the greatest hymns of all time.

The Lord gave them other children  and in 1881 Horatio and Anna, and they  moved to Jerusalem to set up a Christian colony in order to share Christ with the Moslems and Jews living there. He died in 1888 of malaria at sixty years of age but Anna continued the work.

Is it well with your soul? It is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ which enables us to overcome those difficulties which threaten to destroy us. The Savior is waiting for you to look to Him now for help and in your time of need.
